520 |a In October 1995, over a million black men gathered in Washington, D.C. in a huge demonstration of solidarity. Organized by Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, it was a controversial event, viewed with suspicion and hostility by the white establishment. God Is Angry looks at what Farrakhan means to black society and how he came to his leadership role. In tracing the history of the black struggle for power, the film interviews Stokely Carmichael (who now lives in Africa) and other activists of the sixties. Through archival footage the film traces the history of the painful struggle for civil rights and political power. We see the leaders as they were then -- idealistic and angry young men -- and learn what has become of them. Some are still in prison, some have died, some were absorbed into the middle class, and some became Muslims. There are many who dismiss Farrakhan as a racist and an anti-Semite. This film puts him and the movement into historical context and shows how he may continue to play a major role in effecting social change.
