Sam and Jen suggest they try some good, old-fashioned cures, like drilling a hole in her head or maybe a goat's blood transfusion, or perhaps bleeding her with leeches would help. In the 1500s, barbers sewed up wounds and removed warts as well as cutting hair. Unable to dissect human bodies for religious reasons, medieval healers thought that bad odors caused illness and “analyzed” urine. And 40,000 years ago, when sick or injured tribe members were merely seen as a burden, they were pushed off a cliff. Doctors didn’t learn to wash their hands between operations until the 19th century, but medicine advanced rapidly after that.
