Description
Summary:Reminiscing in tempo is a program that evokes the personality and art of Duke Ellington from two angles: the recording of a 1958 concert in Mexico in parallel with exchanges during a party organized on the day of the Duke's anniversary by his sister - a meeting attended by musicians, music critics, and friends. The informal exchanges are summed up in a phrase by the pianist Bobby Short: "A beautiful music and a beautiful person;" who doubted it? Other observations: Duke Ellington, never at rest, never stopping composing; there was a slave among his ancestors; his internalized anger at segregation; the spiritual qualities of his music widely commented on by churchmen. One of the powerful moments is the evocation of his twin relationship with Billy Strayhorn, to the point that it is often impossible to say who is the real author of certain compositions, there was such an affinity of thought between the two men. In addition to exciting archives (a version of "Take the A Train" from 1941, "The Single Petal Of A Rose" in honor of Queen Elizabeth; "Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me" by Hal Hibbler), we savor the beautiful concert in which Russell Procope, Harold Ashby, Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Duke himself (who gratifies us with long choruses) shine. He seems to have loved Mexico, its culture, its people and its landscapes; his "Mexican Suite," too little known, is very beautiful, with its Latin-flavored percussive and rhythmic approach.
